Anthony, Fernley's lone representative in the girls 3A state cross country meet, nearly missed the start of the regional competition because she didn't hear the starting call. But at the state meet on Saturday she was the first to reach starting line, and that was all she needed to repeat as the 3A state champion.

"At the beginning of the race, like the first stretch, I got in first but I didn't think I was going to be able to hold and then when we got to the two-mile marker that's when I knew that if kept the pace I'd win," said Anthony, a sophomore.

Anthony finished in 20 minutes, 39 seconds while Wright, who took the regional title by 10 seconds, finished the race in 20:50. South Tahoe's Shelby McIntyre rounded out the top three at 21:05.

Elko, which is in its first year in the 3A after realignment moved it from 4A, had five runners finish in the top 15 and captured its first state title in school history.

The Indians' 31 points edged out South Tahoe's 37.

Palo Verde's Katie Gorczyca dominated the 4A with a time of 19:48.45, followed by Green Valley's Alyssa Rapovy (20:16.46) and Reno's Erika Root (20:18.94), Carson's Alex Drozdoff, the Northern region champion, was fifth (20:23.31).

Palo Verde took the team title with a score of 58, followed by Damonte in second with 68 and Carson at 75.

Becky Grabow captured the 1/2A state title for Sierra Lutheran with a time of 20:34. But Incline ran away with the team title scoring only 27 points. Sierra Lutheran was second with 82.
